What we are doing is not exactly an empirical study.  We have studied the problem and have formulated an hypothesis as to the exact mechanism which is causing the cracks.  That hypothesis is subject to verification - - or rejection by obtaining some hard data. 

That is what we are doing at the present time.

We have already developed a pretty good idea for a repair for the problem (a vastly less complicated repair) on the assumption that the identified mechanism is verified.

If it is not,   then we will need to re-think the whole issue.

The data will drive this whole issue.
